Our Line Origins
We get asked this question many times; “Where do your breed lineages come from?”
It is a great question, and you should ask this to anyone you ever purchase birds from. Anyone who doesn’t want to answer this question isn’t being transparent, and we love transparency. Everyone should know where their starting foundation flocks came from.
Here, we would love to discuss the details of where all of our heritage poultry lines come from, and be transparent as possible.
Always give credit to where it is due!
- Where did Dark Pine Poultry Silver Laced Wyandotte Lines Originate?
Our lines had their start with an older farmer in the midwest who had Guardhouse stock in the mid 2010s. This is the core foundation for our flock. After that, we were fortunate enough to find and add Hare lineage, and then more recently, we were able to add Foley lineage to our lines through him directly. (We highly recommend going to Foley’s website and checking his line out.)
- Are there any other lineages in Dark Pine Poultry’s Silver Laced Wyandotte Line?
A year or two ago, we sought new blood for our line. We extensively tested and experimented with various reputable breeders across the US. After receiving several test batches, and studying chick types, breeder pictures, and information from breeders on their faults and flaws, we settled on Foley for our potential line cross.
Ultimately, any other reputable breeders that we tried but are not mentioned above were culled from our program. Contact us if you’re curious as to what breeders we tried.
Do you breed hatchery birds?
No, all of the birds that we work with are heritage or exhibition lineages. We do enjoy and have hatchery leghorn layers for egg consumption. Their egg to food ratio we find to be the best, and they lay even during the hot months here in Texas. We highly recommend reaching out to Texas A&M for their shipped White Leghorn hatching eggs.
Do you have any other breeds or varieties?
We are working on a White Wyandotte line from a few different sources, as well as Lavender Wyandottes and Buff Orpington.
